When winter rolls in and the weather gets cold, many families spend more time indoors. As holiday breaks from school approach, young kids can get restless sitting around the house. Crafts are a great way to spend time as a family and engage kids in enriching activities, and there are tons of great winter-themed crafts that use everyday household items! These are some great ideas for the next time you and your kids are looking for something fun to do while stuck inside.

Paper Roll Crafts

Toilet paper or paper towel rolls offer many possibilities for crafts and projects. Try cutting slits or shapes out of one end of the tube to create tabs that can be fanned out. Then, dip that end of the roll in some white paint, and stamp it on colored construction paper to make some fun snowflake art!

Or, with some colored construction paper, glue, and googly eyes, you can turn toilet paper rolls into adorable penguins. Simply cover the tube in black paper, then cut some shapes for the wings, beak, feet, and belly. With a little bit of glue and some fun craft eyes, you’ll have a handsome penguin to play with.

Paper Polar Bear

Similarly, you can use plain white paper and a black marker to make a polar bear. Cut one large circle for the body, a smaller circle for the head, and a few smaller shapes to make the legs, ears, and muzzle. Glue them all in place on a colored sheet of paper and use the marker to fill in features like a nose and mouth.

Handprint Crafts

Kids love playing with finger paint, and while many people are familiar with using handprints to make turkeys in the fall, there are great winter options too! With a white handprint, kids can turn each finger into a snowman to create a whole family of snowmen. Or, with a combination of black and white paint, you can turn an upside-down handprint into a penguin with a bit of extra decoration.

Popsicle Stick Snowflakes

Popsicle sticks are another versatile craft material that is great to keep on hand. One popular way to use them in the winter is to make them into snowflake shapes. Then, kids can decorate them however they want! Color them with markers or glitter gel, glue on some pompoms or buttons, and then turn them into ornaments with a bit of string or ribbon.

With a bit of imagination and some craft supplies, there are endless winter-themed crafts to do with your kids. These are just a few ideas to get started. Kids can make fun craft projects with simple household items and basic craft supplies while keeping warm inside.
